DESIGN, RAPID PROTYPING AND FABRICATION LAB

The Fab Lab is a prototyping, woodworking, metal working, laser cutting, 3-D printing, cold casting, and high tech design facility located in Bethlehem at NCC’s Fowler Family Southside Center. The Fab Lab brings table-top manufacturing to the masses, making it possible to turn a great idea into a physical reality. The lab views itself as a point of service to people of all ages, including non-profits and businesses, and is committed to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship within the Lehigh Valley.

For a relatively small cost, the Fab Lab provides access to modern means of invention with surprisingly easy-to-use equipment. The Lab includes several 3D printers, an Epilog Helix Laser Cutter & Etcher, a Roland vinyl cutter, CNC router, fully equipped wood shop, wood turning studio, a recording sound booth, a CNC Tormach metal mill, a Bridgeport mill, and related metal working tools, a Binks Spray Booth, computers with a variety of 2D and 3D design software, and an assortment of other tools and technology that can help bring your idea to life.

WOODWORKING

Mastering The Table Saw – Sept 14, 16 or Dec 2, 9: 1pm–4pm

This 6 hour course will cover techniques of using a table saw to its fullest potential. Covered will be subjects such as brand selection, safety, accessories, jigging, advanced techniques, making moldings, and tricks of the trade such as circle cutting and bowl making. This time around, everyone will also make a simple, table saw-based project.

Mastering the Router – Jan 20, 27 & Feb 2: 9:00am-Noon

This 9-hour course will cover techniques of using the hand held router to its fullest potential. The router is one of the most versatile tools available to woodworkers. It can do everything from making descorative profiles, to cutting precision joinery. Covered subjects will be brands, safety, collets, accessories, tables, fences, bits, tricks of the trade. Let Ken take you through the basics of routing and dazzle you with some advanced tricks, too. This hands-on class will give you to opportunity to become a better woodworker AND go home with a small project to boot.

The Three Hour Bowl – Sept 21, Oct 14, Nov 4, Dec 9, Jan 18: 9:00am-Noon

In just three hours you’ll learn how to turn a beautiful wooden bowl on a wood lathe, finish it and take it home. This is a really fun class and folks leave kind of amazed at what they can do—even with no prior experience. The Fab Lab has expanded its woodturning lab to include 6 lathes. There is not another like it in the Lehigh Valley. This is a great introductory class with no prerequisites required. Great to do with a friend, spouse, sibling or teenager!

Chair Making – This class meets for 9 evenings: October 23, 26, 30, November 2, 9, 16, 30, December 7, 14: 6:30pm-9:30pm

Building a chair takes you into an area of woodworking that many woodworkers know little about and are a little leery of trying. Don’t let this sway you. Ken has been guiding people through the process at the Fab Lab for the last three years to great success. His designs are elegant, yet easy to build within the time constraints. In fact, Woodcraft Magazine has liked two of his chairs so much, they’ve featured them on their cover.

Bench Making – Thursday Evenings October 5, 12, 19

Need some extra seats around the table? How about a place to sit and put your garden boots on? Why not make a nice bench that serves both these purposes well and gives you a little woodworking experience at the same time? In just three sessions, master craftsman Ken Burton will guide you through the process of making a great, two-seat bench using a combination of hand and power tools. By the end of the class you’ll go home with a nice new piece of furniture and an expanded skill set.
